CHAPTER SEVENTY-SIX
VATICAN CITY
The man reached out again. Laney slammed a front kick into his groin before following with a jab to the face.
âYou might be able to hurt me, but that works both ways,â she growled.
As he bent over, the second man in uniform charged her from the left. Ducking under his haymaker, she dropped to the ground and slammed an uppercut into the manâs groin. Bowling forward, she rammed her shoulder into his knee and heard a satisfying crack. With a cry, the man fell back, crashing onto his partner.
The twenty-something guy in fatigues ran for her, trying to kick her while she was quite literally down.
Bringing up both forearms, she twisted toward the kick, blocking it. Wrapping an arm around the leg, she bolted to her feet, shooting a side kick at the leg he was balanced on. He wobbled. She yanked the leg she held and pushed against his hip. With a cry, his arms windmilled as he crashed onto his back.
Preparing to slam her foot into his groin, she had to switch gears fast as the others six ran toward her.
Diving over the man on the ground, she rolled to her feet and whirled around to face them. All of the men sheâd dropped scrambled to their feet.
Her little burst of energy left her feeling dizzy. It was rote muscle memory that had let her do any of that. Now her limbs felt like theyâd each gained ten pounds.
More concerning, however, was the additional dozen people who raced around the corner and toward her.
Laney took off at a run, albeit a slow one, at least in her mind. It felt like she was running on the beach or through water. She willed her limbs to move faster, but they just didnât seem to be getting the message.
Stupid sleep deprivation.
Up ahead were the doors that sheâd walked through earlier that led to the back of the building, where sheâd been speaking with Rylan. Right now, sheâd love if Rylan appeared. She was pretty sure he would not be part of the mob.
She aimed for them. Her hopes lifted as the doors opened when she was a dozen feet away. But that hope was dashed just as quickly. It was not Rylan stepping through but four people she did not recognize. And none of them looked friendly.
Skidding to a stop, Laney nearly wiped out on the tile floor. She scrambled back, turned, and darted up the stairwell. Gripping the railing as she ran, only in part to help her get up the stairs quickly. Her legs were quickly turning to rubber, and her breathing was harsh.
God dammit, Iâm so tired, she thought, fighting back the spots at the edge of her vision. Flinging herself at the landing, she burst through into the second-floor hallway.
The hallway was empty.
No, no, no. Sheâd hoped the UN soldiers might be around, but then she remembered what Kiki had said about them all going to get a drink.
At the same time, she didnât know what they would be able to do.
